Evidence-Based Practices

Implementing Evidence-Based Practices for Persons With Severe Mental Illnesses

William C. Torrey, M.D., Robert E. Drake, M.D., Ph.D., Lisa Dixon, M.D., M.P.H., Barbara J. Burns, Ph.D., Laurie Flynn, A. John Rush, M.D., Robin E. Clark, Ph.D. and Dale Klatzker, Ph.D.

Extensive empirical research, summarized in several reviewsand codified in practice guidelines, recommendations, and algorithms,demonstrates that several pharmacological and psychosocial interventionsare effective in improving the lives of persons with severemental illnesses. Yet the practices validated by research arenot widely offered in routine mental health practice settings.As part of an effort to promote the implementation of evidence-basedpractice, the authors summarize perspectives on how best tochange and sustain effective practice from the research literatureand from the experiences of administrators, clinicians, familyadvocates, and services researchers. They describe an implementationplan for evidence-based practices based on the use of toolkitsto promote the consistent delivery of such practices. The toolkitswill include integrated written material, Web-based resources,training experiences, and consultation opportunities. Specialmaterials will address the concerns of mental health authorities(funders), administrators of provider organizations, clinicians,and consumers and their families.
